I have a confession to make: I am obsessed with Bang Bang sauce! I made bang bang shrimp pasta last week and bang bang salmon tonight, and I’m already dreaming of bang bang chicken and bang bang salmon bites. But in all seriousness, this easy recipe is a lifesaver on busy weeknights. You’ll only need a couple of simple ingredients to whip up this flavor explosion. My kids ask for this almost every week, and I bet yours will too!

What you will need

Here are ingredients you will need for this delicious easy dinner:

  • Salmon: One whole salmon fillet, skin on. I used fresh Atlantic salmon.
  • Mayonnaise: Choose a good-quality mayo with real eggs and sunflower or olive oil.
  • Thai sweet chili sauce: The foundation of that delicious bang bang flavor.
  • Your favorite spicy sauce (such as sriracha sauce): Adjust the amount of hot sauce for your preferred spice level. Skip it entirely for a kid-friendly version.
  • Garlic powder: A hint of garlic adds savory depth.
  • Salt and black pepper: For seasoning the fish.
  • Fresh limes to serve
Ingredients needed to make bang bang salmon.

Note: While some recipes call for Kewpie mayo, I find regular mayonnaise works just as well (and avoids the added MSG found in Kewpie).

How to make it

  1. Preheat your oven to 360°F (180°C).
  2. Make the Bang Bang Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together the sauce ingredients and set aside. Feel free to use your homemade bang bang sauce recipe or a store-bought version for convenience.
  3. Season the Salmon: Place the salmon fillet skin-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Use a pastry brush to generously coat the salmon with the Bang Bang sauce – don’t be shy!
  5. Bake it: Bake the salmon filet for 25-30 minutes or until the salmon flakes easily with a fork, and the top of the salmon is golden brown.
  6. Extra Flavor Boost: Brush the cooked salmon with some more of this yum yum sauce and squeeze some fresh lime juice over the cooked salmon just before serving.
  7. Serve and Enjoy! This tasty salmon pairs perfectly with rice and your favorite sides.

Important Note: Cooking time will always vary slightly depending on the thickness of your salmon and your individual oven. Be sure to check for doneness using the flaking method and/or an instant-read meat thermometer (145°F/63°C internally) for the most accurate results.

How to Store

  • STORE FOR LATER: Once the salmon has cooled to room temperature, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for 2-3 days.
  • FREEZE ME: The bang bang salmon can be frozen in a freezer-safe container or a Ziploc bag for up to 3 months.
  • REHEAT: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place salmon on a baking sheet and reheat for 10-15 minutes, or until heated through. Cover lightly with foil to prevent drying out.

How to Serve

This Bang Bang Salmon is the star of a quick and flavorful weeknight dinner! Here are a few delicious ideas:

  • Low-Carb: Pair it with cauliflower rice for a lighter meal that still packs in the flavor.
  • Crispy Salmon Bowl: Serve it over a bed of rice with a sweet Japanese spinach salad (goma-ae), some steamed green vegetables, a drizzle of extra bang bang sauce, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
